sewing supply lists

one night pillow making workshop

xx scroll to the top of this page for a list of recommended suppliers in nyc xxx

  • square pillow form. down-filled forms are especially nice! (if you don't want to shop for one, just bring a yard of fabric and you can get a form after the class.)
  • when you make a pillow, the cover is cut to the same dimensions as the form, but an envelope closure back requires extra yardage. to be safe, buy enough fabric to cover your entire pillow 2 times (e.g. 16 x 16 pillow, calls for a 32 x 32 piece of fabric, so get a yard.)
feel free to buy muslin if you just want to practice the first time around. the back and front can also be made from different fabrics if you'd like!
  • recommended fabrics: cotton and cotton blends in a medium weight are the easiest to sew. stay away from fun furs, velvet, stretch fabrics and heavy weight upholstery. please feel free to contact us for advice!
  • disappearing ink pen
  • all-purpose thread to match your fabric
  • pins
  • pin cushion
  • seam ripper
  • scissors, either new or used only on fabric

sewing II: zippered hobo handbag

xx scroll to the top of this page for a list of recommended suppliers in nyc xxx

  • fabric yardage: 1 1/2 yards for bag AND lining (i.e. 3 yards total.) bag: medium weight canvas, denim, wool, corduroy, cotton, linen, etc. can use upholstery fabric, but avoid any material that is especially thick/heavyweight, since it will be difficult to stitch and press. we recommend buying an easy to sew fabric; you can sew more difficult styles later on. lining: cotton shirting, sateen or similar. avoid anything that seems slippery as it will be trickier to cut and pin.
  • 20" all-purpose zipper (NOT an invisible zipper. ask to have a longer zipper cut to this length)
  • optional: D rings or similar for strap (will discuss at first meeting; no need to buy before class)
  • disappearing ink pen
  • all-purpose thread to match your fabric
  • straight pins
  • pin cushion
  • seam ripper
  • scissors, either new or used only on fabric
  • patternmaking paper, newsprint or poster board for tracing pattern (bring to last class)
